Dishwasher Troubleshooting Safety Boundaries
Normal maintenance ends where electrical testing, concealed leaks, sharp debris, hot components, or service-panel removal begins.
Stop immediately
- Smoke, scorching, sparks, or a burning odor.
- A breaker or GFCI that trips again after one reset.
- Water leaking beneath cabinets, near wiring, or across the floor.
- A shock or tingling sensation from the appliance or nearby plumbing.
- A cracked tub, damaged power cord, or melted connector.
Disconnect power at the breaker if it is safe to do so. Shut off the water supply for an active leak. For smoke or fire, leave the area and contact emergency services.
Before touching the filter area
Let hot water and dishes cool. Disconnect power. Remove standing water with a cup or absorbent towel before reaching into cloudy water, because broken glass and sharp labels can be hidden. Wear cut-resistant gloves when debris is possible.
Chemicals and cleaners
Use one dishwasher-safe product at a time and follow its label. Do not combine chlorine bleach with acids, ammonia, vinegar, or another cleaner. Do not pour chemical drain opener into a dishwasher unless both the appliance and product manufacturer explicitly allow it.
