How the starting guide is calculated
For loose powder, liquid, or gel, the general cup-fill bands are based on GE Appliances guidance: about one-third full for 0–3 gpg, two-thirds for more than 3–8 gpg, full for more than 8–12 gpg, and a manual check for the pre-wash cup above 12 gpg. This is a broad starting framework, not a universal dose.
Dishwasher dispenser sizes, detergent concentration, cycle design, and local water chemistry vary. That is why this tool describes the dispenser fraction and an adjustment sequence instead of inventing a gram amount.
Before changing detergent
- Confirm the hardness unit. Ten ppm is soft; 10 gpg is hard.
- Use only automatic dishwasher detergent. Hand dish soap can create excessive suds and overflow.
- Keep loose detergent sealed, cool, and dry. Damp or old detergent can clump and lose performance.
- Check filter cleanliness, spray-arm movement, loading, cycle choice, and dispenser clearance before assuming the dose is too low.
- Change one setting per load and note the result; several simultaneous changes hide the real cause.

- Does this tool calculate an exact detergent dose? No. It identifies a cautious starting direction from water hardness, soil, detergent format, and symptoms. The detergent label and dishwasher manual control the permitted product, dispenser position, and dose range for a particular load and model.
- What if I do not know my water hardness? Use the local utility report or a suitable test strip before making large dose changes. Guessing can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction because mineral film, excess detergent, poor rinsing, and permanent glass etching can look similar.
- Should I cut or unwrap a detergent pod? Do not alter a pod unless its product instructions explicitly say to do so. Store it dry, place it in the specified dispenser, keep the dispenser path clear, and use a compatible cycle according to both product and appliance directions.
