Where to find accurate inputs
- Electricity per cycle: check the yellow EnergyGuide label, product specification sheet, or owner documentation. Use a plug-in energy meter only if its rating and the appliance installation make that safe.
- Electricity rate: divide the electricity portion of a recent bill by billed kWh if your bill does not list an all-in rate.
- Water per cycle: use the figure for the cycle you normally select, not the lowest advertised cycle if you rarely use it.
- Water and sewer rate: combine usage-based charges and convert the unit to a cost per 1,000 gallons. Leave this at zero if water is included in rent or you only want the marginal electricity cost.
Formula and limits
Cost per load = (kWh per cycle × electricity rate) + (gallons per cycle ÷ 1,000 × combined water and sewer rate).
Monthly and annual figures use 52 weeks per year. They exclude detergent, rinse aid, maintenance, fixed utility fees, and the energy used by a home water heater unless that energy is already reflected in the dishwasher cycle figure. Actual cycle consumption can vary by model, selected options, incoming water temperature, soil sensing, and load.
Ways to reduce cost without sacrificing cleaning
- Run full, correctly loaded racks instead of several partial loads.
- Use the normal or eco cycle when it is appropriate for the load and your owner manual recommends it.
- Clean the filter and confirm spray arms rotate freely before compensating with repeated cycles.
- Avoid unnecessary pre-rinsing; scrape large food pieces instead and follow your model's instructions.
- Compare heated-dry and air-dry results on your own machine before assuming the longest option is always required.

Taxes, tiered rates, seasonal changes, household water heating, standby energy, detergent, maintenance, and differences between labeled and real-world cycles can change the amount you actually pay.
- Does the cheapest cycle always make sense? No. A cycle that does not match the soil or load may require rewashing, which can erase the apparent saving. Choose a model-supported cycle that cleans the load in one pass, run sensible full loads, and compare measured outcomes over time.
