How the calculation works
The tool divides the repair quote by the installed replacement price. It then considers age, repeat repairs, major-component work, and safety or water-damage signals. It does not assume that every repair above an arbitrary percentage is wasteful.
- Repair cost ratio: repair quote ÷ installed replacement price.
- History adjustment: repeat faults make another repair less predictable.
- Age adjustment: an older machine has less time to spread the repair cost over.
- Safety adjustment: leaks, scorching, and electrical symptoms require qualified inspection, regardless of the calculator result.
Before accepting either estimate
- Ask whether the diagnostic fee is included in the repair quote.
- Confirm the parts-and-labor warranty and whether a return visit is covered.
- For replacement, include installation parts, permit or electrical work, delivery, and haul-away.
- Check whether a leak damaged flooring or cabinets; those costs are separate from the appliance decision.
- Get a second diagnosis when a major component is blamed without clear testing.
Confirm the symptom before pricing the decision
A repair quote is only useful when it addresses the right problem. Compare the diagnosis with the dishwasher will not start guide or the door-leak guide, and obtain a model-specific professional assessment for electrical, control, pump, or concealed leak work.

- Does the calculator use a universal 50 percent rule? No. The repair-to-replacement ratio is only one input. Appliance age, repeat repair history, the quoted component, warranty coverage, installation cost, water damage, and safety signals can change the decision on either side of a simple percentage.
- What belongs in the installed replacement cost? Include the comparable machine, delivery, installation kit, required plumbing or electrical work, permits where applicable, removal, haul-away, and taxes. Comparing a complete repair quote with only a shelf price makes replacement look artificially inexpensive.
- Can the result tell me whether a quoted diagnosis is correct? No. It compares financial scenarios after a diagnosis and quote exist. Ask what testing supports the diagnosis, what parts and labor are included, how long the repair is warranted, and consider a second qualified opinion for expensive or unclear work.
